Recipe: Mordanting Animal fibers

(such as wool or silk)

Preparation: The fabric should be washed as hot as possible. I.e. wool and silk with wool detergent at approx. 30°C.

Processing

Step 1: For approx. 100 g of fabric, dissolve 30 g of Potash Alum (#64100) in 200 ml of hot water. Then stir this solution into 4-5 l of cold water.
Step 2: Place the washed and rinsed, damp dyeing fabric in the mordant bath and heat slowly to approx. 40°C. Remove the pot from the stove and let it cool down.
Step 3: It is best to leave the fabric in the solution overnight or even longer, gently moving it from time to time. Then rinse well and place in the prepared dye bath while still moist.

Ingredients

ca. 100 g Textile fiber
30 g Potash Alum (#64100)
4-5 l Water
Pot
Thermometer

Note

Depending on the fabric itself (i. e. wool, cotton, silk), the exposure method, time and intensity, the dyes unfold many different shades.

We assume no liability for the processing instructions described above. In any case, we recommend the production and evaluation of sample surfaces.
