Recipe: Calc-Sinter Wash/ Calcareous Sinter Wash

When preparing calc-sinter wash/calcareous sinter wash, you need calcareous water. This is a bi-product when Pit Lime is soaked in water: If the pit lime mud rests for a longer period of time (e.g. one week), there will be undissolved pit lime sediments or deposits at the bottom of the container and, right on top of it, clear water containing dissolved calcium hydroxide. Since 100 milliliters of calc sinter water contain about 0.16 grams of dissolved calcium hydroxide, it is very alkaline. Due to the carbonic acid in the air, it forms a thin transparent layer of calcium carbonate at its surface: the so-called sinter layer.

Processing

Prior to the application of the calc-sinter wash/calcareous sinter wash, it is necessary to moisten the surface with calc sinter water because the wash can be spread more evenly onto a moist surface and will create a better bond with it. Afterwards, the calc-sinter wash/calcareous sinter wash is applied sparingly onto the pre-wetted calc-sinter-surface in one single painting step. You can color the calc-sinter wash/calcareous sinter wash by adding up to 2 % lime-stable pigments. Step 2#99: You can color the calc-sinter wash/calcareous sinter wash by adding up to 2 % lime-stable pigments.
When applying the wash onto fresh, new lime plaster, you can add up to 5 % lime-stable pigments. The same increased amount of pigments is possible if you add 5% Casein Binding Medium (#63210) to the to the calcareous water. Heavily diluted ‚hydrated lime‘, known as ‚milk of lime‘, is less suitable for washes, because it discolors them by creating a whitish fog. Sinter Lime Water (#31808)
lime-proof pigment

Note

Calc-sinter wash is a saturated, clear solution of calcium hydroxide and water. It can easily be prepared with the dispersed Italian pit lime. WARNING Lime is very alkaline and caustic - always wear eye protection, gloves, and a dust mask!

We assume no liability for the processing instructions described above. In any case, we recommend the production and evaluation of sample surfaces.
